Wrought Magnesium Plate for Vibration Testing

Magnesium is admired by engineers for it’s lightweight and strength that results in reduced component mass. However, most material science experts are unaware that magnesium has another beneficial property, vibration damping. The vibration damping properties of magnesium has lead the vibration testing industry to accept magnesium as the material of choice for vibration slip and shaker table components for many years. This includes table tops, head plates, head expanders, and fixtures. All these components need to be rigid and lightweight, which both magnesium and aluminum provide. However, when it comes to damping capacity, nothing is superior to magnesium.

Damping capacity is the ability of a material to absorb vibration (cyclic stress) by internal friction. The atomic properties of magnesium result in the suppression of the vibrations. Especially at high frequencies where the majority of automotive, aerospace, and industrial equipment manufactures are currently testing at. Combining the damping capacity properties with reduced mass, enables potential cost savings over the life of the testing program when using magnesium plate. This is because testing times can be accelerated and smaller vibration testing equipment can be used.
